Even with all its mediocrities, Winstead and the rest of the cast understand this, and that in turn makes each of the performances a little more believable. Umair Aleem’s script vaguely understands that this is more than a revenge story: it’s about Kate’s reclamation as a human being. It’s magnetic-so much so that you can’t really take your eyes away. The camera is skillfully placed and shifted in a way that’s akin to Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade. Nathan Barr’s barreling electronic score paired with Lyle Vincent’s carefully executed cinematography elevate Kate to an unmitigated, thrilling blend of death and destruction of character. The story beats are cliché, and the script is severely lacking creativity and this doesn’t really change, throughout, rather the intensity of the action increases. Up to this point, which is very early on, everything has been fairly familiar on a technical level. She has 24 hours to finish the job before she dies. Not too long after, she mysteriously gets radiation poisoning while on a job to kill her previous target’s boss, Kijima. From that moment onwards, Kate struggles with something that used to be easy for her. Something about the hit doesn’t feel right when she’s forced to kill her target in front of their teenage daughter.
This time, her target is a high-ranking Japanese crime boss. Brutal, bloody-a little cold-but still some wholesome fun!Ĭedric Nicolas-Trojan’s film follows Kate, a cold-blooded assassin who hasn’t fumbled a job in over a decade. While it doesn’t add anything new to a painfully generic formula, the cast burst with charismatic performances. Look no further than Netflix’s new, neon-soaked thriller, Kate, with Winstead as the title character.
But believe me when I tell you that Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a bonafide action star. Admittedly, I’m not the biggest action buff.
